A: Our aircraft can accommodate up to 8 passengers.

Q: What type of aircraft do you fly?

A: We have a fleet of fixed-wing, wheeled multi- and single-engine aircraft.

Q: Are you aircraft all-weather certified?

A: Each of our twin-engine aircraft are Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) certified and have the latest in GPS and navigation technology. We are able to fly through almost any weather conditions safely. We also have a fleet of smaller, single-engine aircraft that are used for 1- and 2-person charters. These aircraft are restricted to daylight conditions with good weather.


Q: Can I book online or by phone?

A: We recommand all customers book their flights online. If you need any assistance please Contact Us. We would be happy to walk through the booking process with you.

Q: Why do you occasionally ask for my body weight?

A: Island Express Air will sometimes request your body weight to most accurately fulfill Transport Canada Safety Regulations and to reduce the chance that a flight is overbooked due to the aircraft being loaded above safe parameters.

Can I bring my pet with me?

Pets are welcome at Island Express Air, but are subject to the discretion of the crew as the pet will travel inside the aircraft and other passengers must also be considered. If you plan to travel with a pet please call us at 1-888-856-6260 and be advised of the following information:

  • All pets must be in a hard-shelled approved airline kennel measuring a maximum 38cm (15") high and 45cm (18") long.
  • Both the pet and its kennel will be counted in addition to the luggage allowance.
  • In addition to standard luggage charges, there is a minimum charge of $26.50 for the pet and kennel weighing 25lbs or less. Pets and kennels weighing more than 25lbs will be charged an additional $1.05/lb

Q: How soon before flight time should I check-in?

A: For all Island Express Air flights, check-in is 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. There is a strict cut-off time 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Passengers who arrive at the airport later than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time risk missing their flight.

Q: Do I need to show photo ID when I check-in?

A: We are required to check one piece of government-issued photo identification for passengers who are 18 or older.

Q: Will I receive an electronic boarding pass?

A: Island Express Air normally sends electronic boarding passes for flights departing Nanaimo and Victoria. Please check your email approximately 1 hour before the scheduled departure time of the flight for the electronic boarding pass email, which will contain additional information and instructions. Electronic boarding passes are not sent for departures from Abbotsford.

Q: What if I do not receive an electronic boarding pass, or I have checked bags?

A: Please wait at the check-in counter for the pilots to check you in. Please note that our standard check-in time is 45 minutes prior to departure, with a strict 30 minute cut-off time. Passengers who arrive at the airport less than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time risk missing their flight.

Q: Do you have check-in agents at all airports?

A: At most locations, our pilots serve as check-in agents once they reach the airport. For this reason, it is normal if nobody is staffing our check-in counter when you first arrive. Our pilots will arrive before the flight's scheduled departure time. Please note that you must check-in no later than 30 minutes prior to your flight's scheduled departure time.


Q: Does Island Express Air offer a discount program?

A: Yes! We offer prepaid Quick Tickets, a book of 10 pre-paid tickets available at a 15% discount from our regular rates. Better yet, Quick Tickets give passengers the change availability of a Freedom Ticket but at a reduced rate. Quick Tickets carry no travel restrictions and can be used by anyone, anytime they fly. Q: Do the prices I see online include airport fees and taxes?

A: Online pricing includes all fares, fees, and taxes.

Q: What are the differences between the Freedom and Flexible ticket options?

A: The primary difference is the freedom to make changes. Freedom tickets allow passengers much more opportunity to change or cancel flights ahead of the scheduled flight time. Generally, passengers who are unsure of their schedule or think they may want to change their flight should select the Freedom Fare. More information about the fare classes is available during the booking process.



Q: Where are you located?

A: We have check-in counters inside the main terminals at Abbotsford, Victoria, and Nanaimo. For more information, please see Locations.


Q: What is the baggage allowance?

Q: What can I bring in carry-on baggage?

A: The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority restricts items that can be included in carry-on baggage. Please refer to CATSA.CA for information about restricted carry-on items.

Q: Do you permit transportation of firearms and ammunition?

A: Firearms and ammunition may be available for transportation in checked baggage if they are declared in advance of the flight and appropriate paperwork is completed. Please Contact Us for more information.

Q: Do you have a Change / Cancellation Policy?

Q: How do I make changes to a booking?

A: All changes and cancellations can only be processed via email; for your protection and privacy, we do not accept changes or cancellations by phone. If you do need to change a booking, please email info@islandexpressair.com. Please note that change or administration fees may apply.


Q: Why am I sometimes asked to sit in a specific seat?

A: On busier days, we sometimes request that you sit in a specific seat to ensure the safe operation of your flight.  


Q: Can I book a private charter?

A: Yes. We would be pleased to discuss charters with you. For more information please see Charters.

Q: Do you send freight or packages?

A: Yes, Island Express Air offers freight and parcel service to its scheduled destinations and also to other destinations. Please call 1-888-856-6260 for rates.

Q: How long is the flight?

A: Flight duration can depend on routing and weather. In most cases, flights between Abbotsford and Vancouver Island are 25-35 minutes, while flights between Nanaimo, Vancouver and Victoria are 15 minutes.

Q: Where can I rent a car?

A: Rental cars are available at each of our scheduled destinations from various companies.  Island Express Air recommends Hertz Rental Cars and offers a promotion for customers who book with Hertz.

Special Guest Services

Q: Do you accept Unaccompanied Minors?

A: Yes, it is our pleasure to accept Unaccompanied Minors subject to the following:

  • Minors must be between the ages of 5 and 11
  • Unaccompanied Minors fare is the same as the adult fare
  • Please allow extra time prior to check-in to complete the Unaccompanied Minor Form
  • Pick-up and drop-off guardians are required to show government-issued photo identification (e.g., Driver's Licence, passport, etc.)
  • An Unaccompanied Minor cannot travel under a weather advisory that is believed by Island Express Air to effect normal flight operations

Q: Do infants travel free?

A: Children under the age of 23 months may travel a no cost if they do not require a seatbelt and can sit on the lap of their guardian. Proof of age will be required at time of check-in (birth certificate or care card).

Q: Do you accept passengers with disabilities?

A: Yes, provided the passenger can walk through screening and climb three steps into the aircraft with limited assistance.

Q: Are pregnant passengers permitted to fly?

A: A woman at any stage of pregnancy is most welcome to fly with us. Women past 28 weks must consult a physician to obtain a written confirmation from their physician stating that they are fit travel and to reduce the chance the seatbelt will compromise the pregnancy, Island Express Air will make the decision on whether a pregnant passenger can fly.
